Reopening of Schwules Museum at the new location

The festivities begin on 17, May 2013 at 7pm in the youth culture center Pumpe (Lützowstr. 42, directly across from our new location), when Klaus Wowereit (Mayor of Berlin) and Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen (General Secretary of the Regional Culture Fund) give welcoming addresses, followed by a show by quick-change artist and singer Joaquín La Habana.

Afterwards, the new rooms at Lützowstrasse 73 will be opened, with the exhibitions Transformation, Update* - Künstlerische Fotografien und  Zwischen Tradition und Moderne - Frühe Gemälde von Jochen Hass 1950 bis 1955.

The welcoming addresses will be translated into sign language.

The events are open to the public.

The project ESM - Expanding the Schwules Museum at the new location is kindly supported by the City of Berlin for the European Regional Development Fund and the German Lottery Fund Berlin.

This year again the Schwules Museum will be represented on Berlin´s 21st Lesbian and Gay City Festival with an own booth. You can find us on the left-hand side of Fuggerstraße between Eisenacher Straße and Kalckreuthstraße. Our booth number is 114.

Exhibition Opening: Ades’ Wonderland – 50 Years of Cult Comedy

Ades Zabel is turning 50! The Schwules Museum congratulates the Berlin comedy star with a birthday show.
The exhibition opens up a view inside the world of Ades Zabel and his characters such as has never before been seen. Photographs, posters, flyers, originalfilm and stage scripts, as well as song lyrics and costumes from the shows will present the artist's diverse creative output. A cross-section of 50 years of life and show history, the exhibition offers visitors comedy culture they can touch, move through, participate with - leaving them astonished, squealing and laughing. The  exhibition is accompanied by events, a film program in the Moviemento cinema in Berlin, as well as tours with Ades Zabel in the flesh.

The first lesbian novel in German literature

In 1902, Toni Schwabe's debut novel appeared: Die Hochzeit der Esther Franzenius (The Marriage of Ester Franzenius). Now Igel Verlag has published a new edition. Editor Jenny Bauer will present the book and its author.

Eröffnung der Ausstellung Rinaldo Hopf - TRICKSTER

Die Bedeutung von "Trickster" changiert zwischen "Halunke, Gauner, Schelm" und mythi-schen göttlichen Zauberern. Auf jeden Fall sind es Figuren, die sich nicht an Regeln der Geschlechternorm oder des "Anstands" halten, die sich auflehnen, Widerstand üben. Sol-che Menschen werden auf Rinaldo Hopfs Aquarellen, Gemälden oder Plakatübermalungen lebendig. Anlass der Ausstellung ist das Erscheinen eines retrospektiven Bildbandes zum Schaffen des Künstlers, ausgewählt und mit Texten von Wieland Speck, Ralf König, Lena Braun, Frank Wagner, Edward Lucie-Smith u.v.a.
Ausstellung und Kunstband zeigen eine Auswahl der Werke des 1955 in Freiburg geborenen Berliner Künstlers aus den Jahren 1968 bis 2013.
Zur Vernissage am 10.9.2013 wird Kurator Wolfgang Theis zusammen mit Rinaldo Hopf und Überraschungsgästen in das Werk des Künstlers einführen.

Vortrag im Rahmen der Ausstellung „Ades’ Wunderland. 50 Jahre Comedy-Cult“ vom 30. August bis 18. November 2013 im Schwulen Museum.

Das Spiel mit und das Hinterfragen von Geschlechterrollen hat eine lange Tradition: So gehörte Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935) zu den Ersten, die sich ab 1900 mit dem Phänomen des Cross-Dressings bzw. Transvestismus in Deutschland wissenschaftlich beschäftigten. Gemeint ist damit das kulturelle Phänomen, dass Frauen wie Männer die Kleidung des anderen Geschlechts anleg(t)en und damit eine Lebensweise jenseits der Geschlechternormen bevorzug(t)en. Der Vortrag präsentiert einen Einblick in die Geschichte des Cross-Dressings in Deutschland, mit Schwerpunkt auf die Zeit der 1920er bis 1950er Jahre. Neben einem Blick auf die Entstehung der vielfältigen Begrifflichkeit werden die historischen Traditionen des Cross-Dressings beleuchtet und die transvestitischen Subkulturen bis in die Nachkriegszeit auch am Beispiel mehrerer Cross-Dresser_innen vorgestellt.

Exhibition Opening of Murnau, If the sand could talk and New in the Collection

December 6th is not a usual day in the Schwules Museum. Three Exhibitions woll be opening at once at 7pm.

Starting with the exhibition of movie maker Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, a 'live documentary' about "correctional" rape will be shown in If the sand could talk und finally the new additions to our collection will be shown in New in the collection.
