From the (Photographic) Darkroom to the Museum

The Schwules Museum is happy to announce that its collections now entail 46 original photographs by US-American visual artist Doris Kloster. The images were shot in New York City between 1989 and 1992 in Doris Kloster’s loft studio in SoHo, in several working dungeons, and on location. They show New York’s tremendous nightclub culture at the end of the last century, featuring dominatrixes, sex workers, performance artists and other notable figures of the underground scene. Portraits of gender-bending performing artists, which Doris Kloster also donated to the Schwules Museum, were taken for the famous FAD Magazine that she edited back then. She adds about her work: “I printed the negatives for the exhibition myself in my bathroom converted into a darkroom!”

Doris Kloster is a US-American photographer, editor, and filmmaker. She is based in Florida and works between Miami-Beach and Berlin, where she has an atelier. Her works were already exhibited in Berlin during a solo show, “Temptation”, in 1992 at the PPS gallery.
