We bid farewell to Ursula Bierther. She had a decisive influence on the feminist art scene in (West) Berlin with her art and the creation of cultural venues. She co-founded the legendary cultural project “Pelze Multimedia,” which was a venue for avant-garde art and performance on Potsdamer Straße from 1981 to 1996. As part of the curatorial team, she created a brilliant exhibition at the NGBK Berlin entitled “Künstlerinnen International 1877-1977” (Female Artists International 1877-1977), countering the male-dominated art world with the diversity of female cultural production. Later, in 1989, she organized exhibitions in and around the Schokofabrik with the artists’ collective SCHWARZE SCHOKOLADE. The color red also accompanied her time and again—in 1992, she created the group “Das rote Skelett” (The Red Skeleton) with other female artists. She was also a frequent presence at the Gay Museum, including at the exhibition “Lesbian Vision” in 2018, and she can currently be seen in the photographs of Petra Gall’s exhibition. We mourn the loss of a pioneer of feminist art and lesbian activism.
