CANCELLED: Desire and Resistance: a Joan-Nestle-Evening

12. May 2024 18:30

Unfortunately, this event has to be canceled due to illness. It will be rescheduled in June or July.

The texts of the icon, author, activist and founder of the Lesbian Herstory Archives are published for the first time in German translation, edited by Lara Lewda in the publishing collective etece buch.

Book presentation with reading and panel discussion moderated by Magda Albrecht with various guests on central themes of the author, such as femsein, queer and Jewish identity, class, sex and intersectionality.

Joan Nestle has been writing rousing, intelligent, combative and loving essays and short stories since the 1980s. These tell of the diversity of lesbian-queer history. Criticism of discrimination and intersectional activism have always been central to her work – especially within feminist and lesbian communities. She reports on anti-queer raids since the 1950s, the black civil rights movement and trade union demonstrations. Growing up in the Bronx, New York, her greatest role models were her single mother Regina and Mabel Hampton, who accompanied her as a lifelong friend, activist and archival colleague. Other heroines in her texts are butches and femmes, comrades and sex workers, Joan and her lovers. Her sex stories, which she describes as “erotic memoirs”, also tell of the latter. The body, gender performance and power are playfully interwoven here. Joan Nestle uses clear and moving language to formulate where resistance is required, the power of queer desire and the importance of finding community.

The event will take place in German spoken language. Tickets are available from the publisher: www.etece.de
