The universe of queer culture is as colorful and diverse as humanity itself. And the history of people who identify as queer goes back further than one might think at first glance. Gay, lesbian, trans*, and intersex people, as well as non-binary individuals and many other LGBTIQ* identities, existed long before terms were coined to describe them, especially in the arts.

Marian Wild explores the history and manifestations of queer art and culture, explains key events, and introduces relevant representatives of the queer community. The common thread is works of visual art, film, and music created by queer artists, dealing with queer aspects, or containing a possible queer interpretation. In addition to works by internationally renowned artists such as General Idea, Gilbert & George, Hannah Höch, Rebecca Horn, Marc Quinn, Man Ray, Martha Rosler, Rosemarie Trockel, and Andy Warhol, there are also some lesser-known artists to discover.

Through written contributions and interviews, numerous personalities and allies of the queer community are given a voice—the 25 guest authors address topics such as the role of lesbian women in art history, the emergence of non-binary comic book heroes, and the conception of queer monuments. This book transports readers—whether they are part of the queer community themselves or are entering new territory—into the exciting universe of queer art and culture and highlights its creative impact on our society.

Marian Wild was born in Nuremberg in 1982 and holds a doctorate in art history. He is a curator, author, journalist, and research associate at the Institute for Modern Art in Nuremberg. In addition to queer culture, his work and research focus on Bauhaus architecture, Japanese aesthetics, the phenomenon of artist collectives, and art, design, and media theory. Selected publications: “Meine Zelle war ein großer Garten – Der Fall der türkischen Ärztin und Kommunistin Banu Büyükavci” (My Cell Was a Large Garden – The Case of Turkish Doctor and Communist Banu Büyükavci) (2023); “inges idee – Kunst im öffentlichen Raum” / Art in Public Space (2024).
