flashmob: who owns the night?

7. May 2025 15:00

In the darkness of clubs, at costume balls and behind disguises, queer people once created free spaces to reclaim them for a short time. Eberhardt Brucks lived these fleeting moments of freedom in the 1950s – despite the threat of prosecution. His photos of carnival balls show how important these spaces were for celebrating oneself and other queers. In conversation with artist Rein Vollenga and curator neo seefried, we delve into these queer strategies of nightlife. Vollenga’s video work Papillon de Nuit – named after the moth that dances in the light of the night and fades away at dawn – captures the fragile beauty of club culture. Where can we find retreats in Berlin today to live out our lives, have new experiences and let go? The event will be held in English.

Registration is not required. Participation is free, you only have to pay for admission to the SMU itself.
