Historic Citizenship for Sex Workers!

Sex workers have been part of our city for a very long time. Yet despite their permanent and ubiquitous presence on Berlin’s streets, in brothels and in many other places, their important contribution to the city’s history is largely lost in the shadow of stigmatization.

Using the example of the Bülowkiez in Berlin-Schöneberg, an audio walk aims to counteract this and thus contribute to ensuring that sex work and sex workers receive the place they deserve in Berlin’s culture of remembrance and that their “historical citizenship” is well recognized. At around 15 stations, the history and current situation of sex workers in the Kiez will be outlined with great artistic works and interesting historical objects. A central element will be the voices of the sex workers who work today in Kurfürstenstraße and Frobenstraße and who themselves will have their say. The project is funded by the Senate Department for Culture and Europe and will be accessible from September at https://berlinhistory.app. 

We cordially invite you to a preview of the audiowalk “Historical Citizenship” with reception on June 2, 2022 at 7 pm at SMU. With this we want to call for the demonstration on June 4, 2022 (Meeting place: 17h at Zoologischer Garten)  we will give a first insight into our project, present a short documentary film about the just founded sex workers union and of course celebrate the International Whores’ Day 2022 properly.
