Was Eberhardt Brucks a silent follower – or someone who was himself at risk and found his own ways to exist in the Nazi system? He served in the Wehrmacht from 1938 and did not have to go to the front due to a disability. Apparently, Brucks adapted to the system. But at the same time, he continued to live his homosexuality – at a time when gay men were persecuted and sentenced under §175. In the exhibition “Strategies of Resilience – Insights into the Life of Eberhardt Brucks”, curator Neo Seefried invites visitors to an open discussion: Was Brucks’ behavior a deliberate act of looking the other way or a necessary strategy to survive under dictatorship? And do queer stories always have to tell of heroic resistance fighters – or should we also devote ourselves to the uncomfortable, ambivalent paths of life?
