Queer archives: Who or what belongs (there)? – Conversations about Queer of Color Past, Present, and Future

26. September 2024 17:30

Queer of Color memories, experiences and coalitions often remain invisible in archives. Turning against traditional archiving practices offers a form of resistance. Following the workshops “Writing the Archive”, which took place at the Schwules Museum and Spinnboden Lesbenarchiv, this event will present creative and resistant encounters with the archive.

After a welcome and introduction by Wassan Ali (Spinnboden Lesbenarchiv), workshop participants will give short inputs on the results of their engagement with the archive material. In the subsequent discussion, Jin Haritaworn (author of an ethnography on queer of color kitchen tables in Berlin in the 2000s and early 2010s), Jessica Walter (Schwules Museum), and Wassan Ali (Spinnboden Lesbenarchiv) will discuss queer BIPoC archives and counter-archives.

Aline Benecke’s current project, Darf man etwa nicht so egozentrisch sein und seine Erfahrungen für sich behalten? Diasporisches Erinnern an Fasia Jansen, involves a dialog with the queer Black German artist and activist Fasia Jansen and combines decolonial and queer-feminist approaches in order to come to terms with the legacy of fascist and colonial violence. Dr. Razak Khan thinks beyond Homonationalism mobilized by Nation states and examines Queer internationalism by looking at two archival remains: the magazine Trikone Queer Internationalism (1998) juxtaposed with a citizen report entitled Lesbian Emergence: Campaign for lesbian rights (1999) published in the aftermath of the movie Fire in India. Larissa Clark is a doctoral candidate at the Humboldt University of Berlin researching Black German narratives. In her contribution, she will analyze the intergenerational inscriptions and contributions of Black German writers and activists to the pluralistic concepts of German identity and their (in)visibility in historiographical and archival representations. As part of the project “Writing the Archive: Queer BIPoC Generations and Belongings”, there were two archive workshops for queer BIPoC and Jewish people to inspire participants to create contributions for a zine. The publication of the zine will be announced on social media.

This event at the Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek marks the conclusion of the project.

The project is led by Wassan Ali (Spinnboden Lesbian Archive) and Jessica Walter (Schwules Museum).

The project is funded by the micro-project fund PRIDE SOMMER 2024 of the Senate Department for Labor, Social Affairs, Equality, Integration, Diversity and Anti-Discrimination.
