Queere Heroe Marlene Dietrich

13. December 2025 14:15

The icon Marlene Dietrich is receiving her own QR code for the audio tour of the non-profit project “Queer Heroes” by Homolulu Berlin, placed at the site of her memorial plaque at Marlene-Dietrich-Platz near Potsdamer Platz.

On Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 2:15 to 3:00 p.m., the expansion of the Marlene Dietrich memorial plaque will be celebrated. The public event honors Marlene Dietrich, the bisexual pioneer of women’s self-determination, resistance fighter against National Socialism, and queer icon. The program includes a short biographical reading by Rafael Nasemann, 1920s-style music by Louisa von Spies, as well as cake and warm drinks. Participation in the event is free of charge. Registration is requested at info@homoluluberlin.de.

About Marlene Dietrich: She stands for the liberation from traditional gender roles and sexual norms, as well as for political resistance against National Socialism. As a German-American actress and singer, she became not only a Hollywood legend but also one of the first public figures to live her bisexuality relatively openly. Her androgynous appearance, revolutionary style of dress, and relationships with women and men made her a pioneer of sexual self-determination and an enduring queer icon.

About the project: The non-profit project “Queere Heldinnen” is an audio tour that enables remembrance and the sharing of knowledge about queer heroines, activists, organizations, and events at historical locations. It aims to reach people who seek information at these sites or who come across the QR-code signs by chance in their everyday lives.

Support and funding: The event is funded by “Demokratie in der Mitte”; the project “Queere Held*innen” is funded by the Hannchen-Mehrzweck-Stiftung and the Berlin Senate as part of the district funding program “Queer Life in the Districts.” Proud partners of the event include the Mitte Museum of the Berlin-Mitte district, the Schwules Museum Berlin, the Magnus Hirschfeld Society, and the Deutsche Kinemathek.
