Trans*, inter*, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer experiences, our desires, our stories, and our loves are often dismissed as insignificant or treated as a sad fate in mainstream culture. We find one-dimensional and discriminatory narratives that follow heteronormative patterns. But then there are these books in which we feel at home. They show us who we are and allow us to connect with others. (Queer) writing can create new worlds. We write out of resistance to unbearable circumstances, to reflect, to remember, or to entertain. Writing can be an urge, a desire, or even a struggle for words. For some, it is a hobby; for others, a profession.
This workshop is for queer authors of all experience levels who want to exchange ideas about fictional and autobiographical writing. We will start with a chapter from Lynn Breedlove’s autobiographical fiction “Godspeed,” share our impressions, discuss our own writing processes, challenges, and writing as activism. In the practical part, we will lead some writing exercises, read to each other, and reflect on language and literature. Anyone who would like to is welcome to bring a favorite book or something they have written. We hope to create a supportive atmosphere that encourages exchange and reflection.
