Vernissage: Better Happy Than Normal! Queer Experiences in Christian Fundamentalist Contexts

25. June 2026 19:00

Opening reception featuring an artist talk and discussion on the topic:
“You can see that right away, can’t you!? Signs of Christian Fundamentalism”

The exhibition “Better Happy Than Normal! Queer Experiences in Christian Fundamentalist Contexts” highlights how religiously based notions of normality can lead to exclusion, spiritual abuse, and so-called conversion practices. Through interviews and artistic works, it also tells stories of resistance, resilience, and the diverse paths by which those affected find a self-determined life as well as new forms of faith and spirituality. Together, we will open this project by the Schwules Museum’s Foundation on June 25, 2026, at 7 p.m.

Following a brief welcome, Sophie Rauscher will speak with Pauli Linke and others in a half-hour panel discussion about various types of queerphobic churches and congregations.

Pauli’s art draws attention to queerness in traditional Christian symbols. At the same time, there are communities that interpret their faith in a modern way or without any pomp at all. What unites them is a range of anti-queer attitudes, from subtle to overt.

The event will be followed by a champagne reception, while supplies last.

The opening will be conducted in spoken German and is free of charge.

Experiences of violence and abuse are also likely to come up in our conversation, even though our focus will be on different topics.
