Workshop: A Little Glittery Thing – Remembering our Ancestors

5. November 2024 13:00

Chapel, an intimate installation work in painted glass, is a memorial and a monument to sex workers both living and dead. Based on concepts from the secret gospel of St. Mary Magdalene, the faces of sex workers from the 20th and 21st centuries form a multi-layered allegory over figures from history, the bible and mythology, with reference to the history of stained glass from medieval to psychedelic.

In the days around Samhain (Halloween), as the veils between the worlds become thinner, sex workers come together to remember our ancestors and friends who lived and worked alongside or before us. We will learn about sex workers from history, the bible and mythology as we each make small stained glass amulets to magically tie us to our past. Finally we will hang these amulets inside the chapel in a group ritual where they can remain as part of the exhibition during the closing week.

This workshop is for sex workers only, for 12 participants of all genders and sexual orientations. The workshop is in English.

Speaker:
A feral stripper-dyke’s wank fantasy, the glamorisation of precarity, camp as a response to suffering – Ginger Angelica builds nightmare contraptions and otherworldly places and  for the on-shift daydreaming sex-prole. Her work talks back to the voyeurism and scrutiny directed at the sex-art-worker with fantasy and myth-making, infusing the mysticism of a Catholic upbringing with the eclectic heathenism of the stripper locker room.
