Press Release: If the sand could talk

11. November 2013

7th December 2013 – 10th March 2014
Curators: Birgit Bosold, Stephanie Kuhnen

Dineo Madwayi and Des’re Higa are two lesbian women from the Cape Town townships. Both of them have experienced corrective rape. “Corrective rape“ is a hate crime in which rape is perpetrated because of a person’s perceived sexual or gender orientation. “If the sand could talk” is an anthology of their stories in film, photography, audio and text collected by Renata Har and Conor Creighton.

The format this anthology adopts is live documentary. It takes the emphasis on time in traditional documentary and replaces it with space. It invites the spectator to journey into the pieces and back into themselves. The distance compared to a traditional documentary is shortened.

Conor Creighton is an Irish writer and visual artist. He has worked with the Guardian, Vice, Time Magazine and Noctua Press. He lives in Berlin. Renata Har is a Brazilian artist. She studied at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris at Christian Boltanski’s studio. Her work is represented by L’Atelier KSR and Galeria Silvia Cintra Box 4. She lives and works in Berlin.
