The inside of a Moroccan house: seated in the middle of the yard is Charles W. Leslie, his German shepherd dog “Joy” stretched out at his feet. They are surrounded by opulent vegetation; there are plants and vases with flowers everywhere. Pure exotism, including a fountain. The guardians of the German language have recently added the word “queer” to the Duden edition 2017, the equivalent of the Oxford English Dictionary. Gay, intellectual and militant – the sexologist and gay activist Martin Dannecker is a homosexual man of a new type. Wearing his flamboyant vinyl coat he joined the student movement in the 1960s, shook the gays out of their sleep in 1971 together with Rosa von Praunheim and caused an ongoing discussion about homosexuality in cooperation with Reimut Reiche in 1974.

Marc Martin: Fenster zum Klo - Public toilets & private affairs

Urinals have always had a bad reputation. For some years now, French photographer Marc Martin has been exploring the history and the stories of public toilets, from Paris to Berlin.

In these shrines, hijacked by men who have sex with men for generations, countless relationships and friendships have been forged, furtively, intensely, unexpectedly.  This re-purposing of public toilets will have left many more traces in the archives of vice squads...
