Simone de Beauvoir: "You aren’t born a woman, you become one"

Special Exhibition in the Context of Change of Scenery 2.1

Is women's empowerment an old hat, an out of date discussion, or a project of yesterday? Didn’t the category of gender disappear long ago? Do we still want to transcend Beauvoir's men today? Hasn’t the idea of a superior gender been superseded? If you look around Europe and the world today, this concept of gender is simply reiterated, or has never been questioned at all. The negation of women's empowerment also affects the rights of...

Change of Scenery 2.1: Work in Progress

“I need a change of scenery, said the birch tree,” sang Hildegard Knef (Neff) once, and henceforth started writing her own lyrics. Even in everyday life one speaks about a “change of scenery,” if the situation is to be changed fundamentally. A change of scenery is more than a whitewash, it is a drastic change, nonetheless only giving a new background for the existing inventory. A tool of interpretation, a different view, not only in everyday life, but also in terms of identity, theories and...

Odarodle - An imaginary their_story of naturepeoples, 1535-2017

The artistic research exhibition Odarodle – an imaginary their_story of naturepeoples, 1535-2017 casts, for the first time, a postcolonial perspective on the collection and history of the Schwules Museum*. The exhibition proposes a thought-exercise: that there are problematic associations between the museum representation of homosexualities and the ethnological display formats developed over the course of European colonialism. Odarodle presents the work of 16 artists, mostly Berlin-based, including 10 newly commissioned pieces. These contemporary positions respond to the Museum, its archive, and its practices as both research material and aesthetic medium. > more

Kai Teichert: House of Joy

Curated by Wolfgang Theis

The inside of a Moroccan house: seated in the middle of the yard is Charles W. Leslie, his German shepherd dog “Joy” stretched out at his feet. They are surrounded by opulent vegetation; there are plants and vases with flowers everywhere. Pure exotism, including a fountain. If you look closely, you will notice that the water the fountain spurts is a fantasia of men fucking. Actually, there are men everywhere in this “House of Joy.” They are incorporated into the...
